HISTORY
This Church was started in 1951 in the North Beach district of San Francisco as the "Italian Assembly of God." In 1956 the church moved to 908 Cortland Avenue in the Bernal Heights district of San Francisco and then changed the name in 1959 to "Community Assembly of God of San Francisco." In 1972 Rev. & Mrs. Edward A. Stewart became the pastors, and soon after they began their ministry the Church began to flourish.
The Church quickly outgrew the space at 908 Cortland Avenue so the property (formerly the Star Market) at 1819 San Jose Avenue was purchased and remodeled in 1977. Again the sanctuary was soon filled to capacity and plans were made to find a larger facility to meet the needs of a growing ministry.
When the availability of the property at 355 Ocean Avenue (formerly the Brentwood Market) was brought to their attention, it was realized that the Church would probably never again have an opportunity to own such a large building with an adjacent parking lot at a major intersection of San Francisco. In response to God's divine direction, the congregation stepped out by faith and embarked upon another building project. After much sacrifice and labor, the new building at 355 Ocean Avenue opened for worship in August, 1989. Since then, many various ministries have been established and the church continues to reach out to the neighborhood with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Ed Stewart was born in Great Falls, Montana and did not serve the Lord in his youth, but the prayers of his mother prevailed when Ed received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of 23. Two years later he was called by the Lord into the ministry. Later he served as Assistant Pastor of Pleasant Valley Assembly of God in Chico, California. He then spent two months in India on a world missionary tour. When he returned to the states, he and his wife served as field representatives for the college ministry of the Assemblies of God. The Lord used the Stewarts to build a strong college ministry on the San Jose Sate University Campus.
Pastor Stewart made a strong impact in the neighborhood, the City, and with many people during his 35 years of ministry here. In addition to leading this church through the purchase and remodeling of 2 different properties in the City of San Francisco, he was influential in working with officials from the City to get a mural painted in Excelsior Park and also helped to get the Excelsior Youth Center built. Pastor Stewart had a vision to see the youth generation touched with the power of God, and it was his desire to have a Youth Center established at 355 Ocean Avenue.
After 35 years of faithful leadership, the Lord took Rev. Ed Stewart home to his reward on May 9, 2007 after a difficult battle with cancer. His wife, Rev. Mary Stewart, is continuing the work that she and her husband began 37 years ago here in San Francisco.
